The Bund

August 12, 2010
Today I decided to see the Bund and the surrounding area.  On my way I stopped to get a steamed dumpling from a street vendor.  It was filled with green and brown mystery stuff.  I think it was vegetables and tofu.  It was okay.  So anyways, I believe the Bund is the oldest building used for official business in Shanghai.  It was built during the days when Shanghai was a French colony and it is still used today.

The Bund is located along side the Huangpu River.  There is a huge walkway along the river also known as the Bund.  The river is lined with tall unique skyscrapers for as far as the eye can see.  I have never seen so many skyscrapers or fancy buildings in one area.  They must go on for miles.  The river divides Shanghai into to areas.  I think East Shanghai is the expensive side.  At night they light up the buildings with all kinds of lights.

This is what the Bund looks like during the day.  Not too many people there.  Probably because it is too hot and humid.

This is the Bund at night.  I have never seen so many people crowded into one area.  This is looking only one direction.  Imagine being surrounded by people like this in all directions.  I think everyone in Shanghai or maybe even China was here tonight.

Even all the streets surrounding the Bund were packed.  This is a street like 6 blocks away from the Bund on the way back to my hostel.

Oh yeah.  I almost forgot the most important story of the day.  Today while I was hanging out at the Bund waiting for it to get dark so I could see the lights I was scammed by a "nice" couple.  Okay I wasn't actually scammed, but they tried.  While sitting down a couple came up to me and the guy asked if we could take a picture together.  I said yes.  So we started talking after that.  I was thirtsy so I said I was going to get a drink from a nearby drink cart.  He walked with me and asked if I had ever been to a traditional tea ceremony.  I said no and he asked if I would like to join him nd his wife as they were on their way to one.  Right away I got suspicious of them.  I said yes to not be rude in case they were being real, but inside I was thinking I am not going with them so what do I saw to get out of it that is not rude.  So as I waiting for the guy to buy his drink another stranger that I just passed (I remembered him because he gave me a weird look as he passed me) handed me a note and left.  Right then I knew for sure it was a scam.  I opened the note and it said "the couple is trying to scam you.  They will ask you to go get tea."  So I turned to the couple and said that the stranger was my friend and I needed to leave.  I caught up to the stranger and thanked him.  We got to talking and he said what they do is take you to a fancy restaurant and run up the bill then leave so you have to pay for it.  His name is Greg and he is from Poland.  So after that we ended up hanging out for the evening and walking around the Bund.  We are going to meet up tomorrow.  It is nice to have someone else because you never know what other people are up to.

People's Square Area

August 12, 2010
Hey all.  Today I got up and ran a few errands in the morning (store and money exchange).  I bought a delicious local apple for breakfast.  Anyways after the errands I starting wandering the streets looking for a place to buy a train ticket to Beijing (I am leaving for Beijing on Sunday).  I was lost and another nice local started to help me.  His name was Bill.  This guy works for an American company so that is how he learned English.  So Bill walked around with me for like 10/15 minutes try...

Finding the Hostel

August 12, 2010
So it is Thursday August 12th and I am in Shanghai.  I got here yesterday afternoon.  On the plane ride over I was already eating food I would never normally eat.  I am not a very adventurous eater, but I told myself I was going to try all kinds of local foods.  So on the plane to Shanghai I ate shrimp (I am not a seafood eater), mushrooms (I don't eat most vegetables nor fungus), some unidentified meat/seafood (I don't know what it was - it kind of looked like octopus, but it was very chewy)...

Korean Food

August 11, 2010

I was having trouble sleeping in the airport so I decided to go get some food before my flight.  Earlier I had seen a place with real Korean food.  So I thought I would eat there because I didn't fly halfway around the world to eat subway (which was right next to it).  Anyone that knows me well knows that I am not a very adventurous eater, but I decided that while on this trip I am going to try all kinds of food.  So looking at the menu I decided not to get the national dish of kimchi soup (k...

Seoul Korea Airport

August 10, 2010
Hey everybody.  I just arrived at the airport in Seoul, Korea.  It is 5am Wednesday August 11th local time here.  I have just been flying for 13 hours and I am tired.  But at least I got to eat 2 good meals and watch 3 movies on the plane so the flight wasn't too bad.  The landing was pretty cool because it felt like we fish-tailed on the runway as we landed.  It was definitely the roughest landing I have ever had.  Well I have to wait for about 6 hours until my flight to China, which is at 1...
