A Day of Animals

The weather has been getting hotter lately, but it has still rained a few days in the early evening. It has been a typical week. Although I have started to settle in more. I finally moved into my temporary rented room and I will move into my permanent room on Saturday. Well permanent until I change apartments in April. It feels nice to have place to stay other than a hotel. I have already started cooking my own meals and even went grocery shopping the other day. I have also been doing a little shopping lately trying to add some more clothes to my collection so I don't have to do laundry every few days. I am definitely beginning to adjust to life here. It was a bit of a transition as I am not used to city life. For example, I am not used to grocery shopping day by day. I am used to buying a couple weeks of groceries at a time, but I don't have the room to store it all and I don't have a way of getting it home as I don't have a car. So you can only buy what you can carry. I am sure this is typical life in any big city. As soon as I get into my permanent room I will take some pictures of my room, the apartment, and the surrounding area so I can show them to you. The only truly excited thing I have done this week is go to Jurong Bird Park and the Night Safari last Saturday night. I absolutely love all 3 zoological parks here in Singapore especially the Night Safari. So first I went to Jurong Bird Park (Jurong is the name of the area it is located in).

Jurong Bird Park is a zoological park dedicated ONLY to birds, hence the name bird park. The park has all kinds of birds from the well known to the lesser known. The first area I visited was Penguin Coast which of course had .............. penguins.

The next area was African grasslands and I ran into this very unusual and angry looking bird.

This bird just stood there very still. It looked like it was a secuity guard preventing anyone from entering that area and I have to admit if I saw this bird in the wild I would probably turn around. He just looked very angry and scary. Next was the relatives of dinosaurs. You can get really close to these Emu's which allowed me to get a great close up picture of this one.

What a cute face, huh? Then I stopped to feed the Lories.

These little birdies were very hungry. So hungry in fact that they were constantly fighting with each other to get to the food. Finally, I went to the area known as The World Of Darkness. Here they had all kinds of nocturnal birds like this snow owl.

I really enjoyed the bird park. It is not huge, but a great place to spend a 3 or 4 hours. After the bird park I went to the Night Safari at the Singapore zoo. The Night Safari is actually located next to the zoo and is a completely separate place. It is not the zoo just at night time. I love the Night Safari and I highly recommend it to everyone if you happen to be in Singapore. Unfortunately because it is night time, hence the name Night Safari, there is not a whole lot of light. So I was not able to get any pictures of than of the entrance.

This is a fire show at the main entrance plaza. Once you enter the park you can either walk around the park or you can take the tram. You must take the tram to get the full experience. Last time I took the tram I happen to go by the lions right at feeding time. It was really cool because there was a side of beef hanging there and the dominant male was all bloody around his mouth enjoying his dinner. He was even roaring to keep the other lions out of the way. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience. That is as close to a wild encounter as possible without actually having a wild encounter. This time there was nothing absolutely amazing like the lion story, but I still enjoyed the park. It is very different to see the nocturnal animals at work doing whatever it is they do instead of sleeping like they usually are at regulae daytime zoos. Well Saturday was definitely an action packed day and definitely the highlight of my week. Oh and on Friday I saw JUST GO WITH IT (the new Adam Sandler movie). It was hilarious and I recommend it to anyone wanting to see a good movie. Have a great week everyone and I will blog again next week.
