Kuala Lumpur For A Day

May 16, 2011
Ronny and Marisa (two long time friends of mine) just left Singapore a few days ago.  They came to visit Ronna and I for about 2 weeks.  For those 2 weeks I was very busy shoeing them around.  We saw lots of things and ate lots of food.  We did not do anything new in Singapore that I haven't blogged about before so I am just going to focus on the 2 side trips we took.  The first side trip was a day trip to Kuala Lumpur (KL), Malaysia.  I have been to KL a few times, but it has been about 10 years since I have spent any real time there.  I was only taking Ronny and Marisa for the day so I had to plan accordingly.  Unfortunately Ronna had to work so she was not able to join us.  :(  Anyways, we got a 6:30am flight to KL.  The flight was only an hour so we got in around 7:30am.  My only plans for the day was to see Batu Caves (a Hindu religious site) and Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) as this is where the Petronas Twin Towers are located along with the Menara or KL Tower.  So first thing we did was catch a train to Batu Caves from the airport.  Actually we took a train to the city and then changed trains to Batu Caves.  This was all new for me as 10 years ago there was no train to Batu Caves.  It only took 30 to 45 mins to reach Batu Caves.  Batu Caves is a a cave system that has some Hindu temples and shrines inside of it.  To reach the cave entrance you need to climb the steps.

It is not as bad as it looks.  The hardest part of the steps is avoiding the monkeys.  The monkeys are like little punks.  You need to be careful of them as they can be very nasty at times.  We saw one monkey push a lady as it ran by, another one stole a water bottle, and one even hissed and threatened Marisa.  But they sure do look cute.

Like I said earlier the inside of the cave has Hindu temples and shrines.

As you can see the cave looks very empty.  That is because it was.  10 years ago the cave walls were lined with statues and scenes out of the Hindu religion with a few temples for prayer scattered throughout.  Now there is almost nothing inside.  There was one scene and two prayer shrines.  I don't know what happened to everything else.  I have to admit it kind of sucked especially since I know how wonderful it was before.  I don't know if things were removed temporarily or forever, but I left there very disappointed.  In fact I have no desire to ever visit Batu Caves again and that is sad because last time I was so amazed by the place.  The only good thing about Batu Caves was the monkeys and the view of KLCC.

On the left you can see the Petronas Twin Towers (once the tallest buildlings in the world and made famous by the movie Entrapment with Catherine Zeta Jones) and on the right is Menara or KL Tower.  Petronas is taller, but Menara is built on a hill so it is higher.  Petronas is very hard to go up because they limit the number of visitors so we went to Menara which gives a better view anyways since it is higher.  It was a fun day, but we were so tired from getting up very early and not sleeping much the night before.  In fact we were all constantly falling asleep throughout the day.  Anytime we sat down we would drift in and out of sleep.  So we opted to catch an early flight home even though we had to pay a penalty for changing our flight.  It was well worth it to get home 3 hours earlier.  So like I said it was a fun day, but so tiring especially when you start out super tired.

iPad 2 Is Finally Here!

April 29, 2011
Yahhhhhhh!!!  I finally got my iPad 2 after months of waiting.  I decided around Christmas time to get an iPad, but I wanted to wait for the iPad 2 since it was coming out soon.  Well in March it came out in the US, but not in Singapore.  So I had to wait some more.  Then in the beginning of April Apple announced the iPad would be available in Singapore in April sometime.  Well they announced on Thursday morning that it would be out on Friday.  So I lined up at EpiCentre (a premium Apple rese...

April 27, 2011
Yahhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!  I just got my one year social visit pass (SVP) today.  So I can now officially stay in Singapore for one year.  The pass is an ID card and whenever I leave the country going through immigration should be easier.  My next step is to find a job.  So far everything is going good.

Only 5 days until the next set of visitors arrive.  :)

Long Weekend To Tioman

April 25, 2011
So while the girls were visiting we took a long weekend trip to Tioman Island in Malaysia.  Tioman is a small tropical island off the southeast coast of mainland Malaysia.  It was a about a 4 hour bus ride followed by a 1.5 hour ferry ride.  Here is what the ferry looked like.

I rented the entire top floor of this chalet.

Our room was on the left and the girls room was on the right.  The resort was surrounded by rainforest and beaches.

As you can see the resort was very pretty.  There was a golf...

First Visitors

April 25, 2011
So here is a few of the pictures with the first set of visitors.  We did lots of stuff everyday.  In fact I kept them so busy I can't even remember all the things we did.  I was completely exhausted by the time they left, but we had a great time with the visitors and we know they had a great time too.  So here we go.  This is a picture at night along the waterfront near downtown.

Pictured is Ronna with Koreena and Nicole.  Next is Nicole and I hiking through the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve.

No Time To Sleep

April 13, 2011
Whew!!!  Since the visitors arrived a few days ago we have been running around Singapore non-stop.  So far we have gone to like a thousand shopping malls, Buddhist temples, Hindi temples, Muslim mosques, Sentosa, Little India, Chinatown, 2 shows, the night safari, hiked in the rainforest, and rode the flyer.  I promise to post some pictures of all these things as soon as I get some free time, which will probably be after they leave.  So stay posted for some great pictures.

Typical Lunch At Amoy

April 7, 2011
I normally meet Ronna for lunch on Tuesdays and Thursday (that way she can still spend time with her friends and colleagues on the other days like she used to before I came here).  We always eat near her work.  Usually at the nearby MRT station (there's a Japanese resto we like a lot there) or at the Amoy St. hawkers center (which we just call Amoy).  Every once in a while we will go somewhere else but 95% we go to one of these 2 places.  Today we ate at Amoy.  There are lots of options there...

Work Visa and Student Loan

April 7, 2011
I have just received two great pieces of information today.  First, I have been approved in principle for my one year visa here in Singapore.  To get the long term visit pass I just need to get a medical examination and submit my paperwork that I already submitted online.  I have my appointment with immigration on April 27th.  So the visa is as good as mine and I will officially have it April 27th assuming I run into no problems (which I shouldn't).  Second, I just got notice that my student ...

Southern Ridges Hike

April 6, 2011

Last Sunday we took a walk/hike along the southern ridges here in Singapore.  There are actually a bunch of trails that all connect to form a long path (about 6 miles) through the southern ridges.  Before we left we packed a lunch and some water so we could stop and have a picnic along the way.  The whole trip took us about 5 hours, but we also took our time and enjoyed.  It could easily be done in half the time or even quicker.  We took the bus to Vivocity, which is a mall that is also the g...

Daily Life Updated

April 6, 2011

Hey all sorry for the delay.  I am having technical difficulties with the website.  I can see the website fine, but I am having trouble loading the sitebuilder website.  I am working with support from the website, but I don’t know if I will ever get it fixed.  So by now you may be wondering how I am blogging right now.  Well these new blogs were written on Ronna's laptop.  I completely forgot about her laptop as we always use my since it is faster.  I also wanted to say thanks to my dad...
